AGNC Investment Corp. is a real estate investment trust (REIT) that invests primarily in residential mortgage pass-through securities and collateralized mortgage obligations backed by U.S. government-sponsored enterprises or federal agencies. The company finances its investment portfolio through collateralized borrowings structured as repurchase agreements. As a REIT, AGNC is not subject to federal corporate income taxes provided it distributes at least 90% of its taxable income to shareholders. Incorporated in 2008 and headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, the company was formerly known as American Capital Agency Corp. before adopting its current name in September 2016.
